大変な被害の出た東日本大震災の発生から、今日で3年となりました。
テレビなどでも関連の特集が多く組まれていますが、在日米軍司令部からも以下のような
声明が発表されています。

USFJ releases statement on third anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake
Yokota AB, Tokyo Japan - Today marks the third anniversary of the Great East Japan
Earthquake. The world watched in horror at the unprecedented triple disaster that
rocked Japan that Friday afternoon. Japan grieved the tragic loss of families and
friends as a result of the earthquake, the destructive tsunami, and subsequent
nuclear crisis.
What the entire world also witnessed in the aftermath of those events was the
determination, strength and resiliency of the Japanese people. From the bravery
of the first responders and the entire Jietai, to ordinary citizens throughout
the country, the indomitable Japanese spirit in the face of such adversity was
displayed for all to see.
As tomodachi and neighbors, U.S. Forces Japan was honored to work together with
the Government of Japan and alliance partners to provide support and assistance
during that time of crisis. Through OPERATION TOMODACHI, our already strong alliance
was enhanced beyond just one of partnership, but one forged in trust and respect.
This experience serves as the foundation of our work today and into the future.
The Tohoku region's road to recovery will be a long one, but there has been much
progress achieved already. As we, too, pause to reflect and honor the memory of the
victims and their families, we pledge our continued friendship and support to our
Asia-Pacific cornerstone alliance partner. We also remember the lesson of March 11
is not nature’s destructive power. The true lesson is the enduring ability of
the human spirit to overcome adversity.

東日本大震災3年を迎え在日米軍司令部報道発表資料
横田基地、東京―本日、東日本大震災から3年を迎えました。
世界はあの金曜日の午後、前例の無い三重もの惨事が日本を襲った恐怖を目の当たりにしました。あのような地震、壊滅的な津波、そして直後の原発危機、日本の皆さんは家族や友人を失い深い悲しみの中にありました。
世界中が証人となったこれらの出来事の結果は日本の皆さんの決断力、強さ、そして復興力でした。初動活動に従事した方そして総ての自衛隊員と、全国の一般国民の勇気と、あのような逆境においても立ち向かう日本人の気骨は全世界に示されました。
友達そして隣人として在日米軍は日本政府や同盟国と共に、そのような危機的状況においても支援と援助を提供するために任務に従事できることを誇りに思います。トモダチ作戦では、既存の強力な同盟がパートナーシップという概念を超えて信頼と尊敬の基に築かれていました。この経験は現在および将来の任務の礎となっています。
東北地方の再建は長い道のりとなるでしょう。しかしすでに多くの進歩に到達しています。私たちとしても被害者とその家族の想い出に思いを馳せるのと同時に、誇りに思い、アジア太平洋の礎石である同盟国への友情と支援の継続を誓います。3月11日の教訓がただの自然災害の力ではないことをもまた記憶します。真の教訓は逆境を乗り越える不朽の人間の意志の力です。

あの震災を受け、アメリカを含む他国は日本を支援、日本国内でも多くの人が一丸となって
事態に臨みました。またその姿は海外でも高く評価されたことを覚えています。
しかしあれから3年、まだまだ東北では多くの方が避難生活を送っており、将来への不安を
抱えているのが現状です。そんななか、原発や放射線の問題を含めてさまざまな活動が起きたり
意見も出ており、さらに被災地から離れた地域ではすでに震災は過去のもの、
他人事であるような空気も残念ながら感じてしまいます。
ブルーインパルスも松島に戻りましたが、基地はまだ整備が続いていることからも分かるように、
復興は道半ばです。
「ボランティアに行きましょう」といった具体的な支援だけでなく、東北の現状を忘れずに
ちょっとしたこと、自分にできることでこつこつと復興を支え、あのときのように
みんなが一丸になったことを忘れないでいたいと思います。
